Principal Backend Software Engineer

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced Principal Software Engineer to be a part of our Core Platform Engineering team! The Core Platform team’s objective is to innovate and deliver a platform for engineering systems to be built with an API-first approach. Your objective will be to drive the technical vision and lead the initiatives that support BFA brands’ operations with highly maintainable and available systems. The solutions you deliver will improve the resiliency of our engineering applications and expand our technology portfolio by applying a balance of cutting-edge technologies and practical approaches.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Leading a team that builds scalable systems with stringent correctness and best practices
  • Identifying and implementing design patterns to ensure highly available systems
  • Driving engineering excellence and processes by identifying opportunities to ensure higher code quality, improved documentation, and robust test coverage
  • Designing and implementing the core technologies and microservices framework that enables engineering teams to build maintainable and scalable systems
  • Researching and implementing new technologies in order to innovate
  • Mentoring engineers

What We’re Looking For

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience
  • Fluent in at least one backend language such as Java
  • Expert knowledge of containers and orchestration (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Nomad)
  • Experience with event-driven architectures with Kafka or other messaging technologies
  • Experience in designing and building large-scale distributed systems
  • Experience with utilization and optimizing relational and non-relational databases
  • Understanding of tradeoffs and decision-making with an ability to solve complex problems to deliver results
  • Demonstrate an ability to have an organization-wide impact by leading and driving large scale projects to completion
  • Familiar with API Gateway and applying rate limiting and throttling to ensure application performance
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering

Bonus if You Have

  • Experience with AWS
  • Experience with ElasticSearch
  • Experience with service mesh frameworks such as Istio, Linkerd, Kuma
  • Experience with alerting and monitoring systems and processes
